Louise Glück compte depuis longtemps parmi les voix majeures de la poésie américaine contemporaine. Elle avait déjà publié douze recueils de poèmes et deux essais sur la poésie lorsqu'elle reçut le prix Nobel de littérature en 2020. Le lecteur découvrira grâce à ce volume rassemblant L'iris sauvage, Meadowlands et Averno, en version bilingue, comment depuis son premier livre, Firstborn, paru en 1968, la poète n'a eu de cesse de réinventer son art à chacun de ses recueils, conçus comme de véritables compositions polyphoniques. Une préface inédite de la traductrice et universitaire spécialiste de Glück en France, Marie Olivier, viendra éclairer cette oeuvre singulière, dont le lyrisme s'apparente à «une traversée et une mise à l'épreuve du corps, celui du texte, mais aussi le nôtre, fait de chair et de sang, [...] traversé par toute la gamme des émotions humaines, dans toute leur simplicité, leur fugacité, et leur profondeur.»

Marigold et Rose sont des soeurs jumelles, âgées d'à peine un an. Leur quotidien est rythmé par la sieste et le bain, leurs apprentissages et les soins que leur apportent Père et Mère. Mais leur vie intérieure excède largement les limites de ce monde restreint dans le temps et l'espace.
